Are you looking forward to visiting Reclaimed Youth at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden show this year?
With one sleep to go until we begin the bump-in process at the magnificent Royal Exhibition Building, I’ve been busying myself with final preparations – lists, lists and more lists. I just can’t wait to start bringing my forgotten old playground to life with the most beautiful selection of stunning local and seasonal blooms!
To awaken your imagination I’ve created a little story that I’d like to share with you – whether you’re visiting or not I’m sure you’ll be able to relate to some of the images and I encourage you to take a few minutes to enjoy it.
What is Reclaimed Youth?
My 6m x 3m installation tells the story of an old playground, a place where imaginations (and kids) ran wild and is generously sponsored by Flowers Victoria. We all have fond memories of our local playground, but whatever happened to this world of fantasy and discovery? “Reclaimed Youth” offers visitors of all ages a quiet moment to ponder their own treasured playground memories. Afterall, there is still a child in us all.
It seems we have very much become a throwaway society, with little regard for the long term consequences on our environment. I wanted to share how beautiful something can become when given a second life, and the simplicity and optimism of the childhood playground felt like the perfect setting.
Practically all of the items used in this display are reclaimed. The iron fence and timber were from a junkyard, the cement sheeting off cuts were salvaged from a timber yard and backyards throughout Melbourne – even the paint was a mis-tint at the local hardware store. And as you’ve come to expect from floriography, preference was given to seasonal, locally sourced flowers and floral foam was strictly avoided.
Reclaimed Youth will be displayed inside the Royal Exhibition Building, downstairs at the western (Rathdowne street) end of the centre aisle, in position C4.
